Painting Kitchen Cabinet (August 3, 2009)
Sometimes, you may want to give a fresh new look to your kitchen, without changing the d¨¦cor. There are many options to renovate the kitchen. You may change the floor of the kitchen, change the kitchen cabinetry, refinish the countertops, change the cabinet accessories or paint the walls or cabinet. Painting can serve the purpose, because it is the low-cost alternative to an expensive remodeling project. In fact, it is the easiest, inexpensive and the fastest method to update and spice up your old, dull looking kitchen. Being a mainstay in kitchen, cabinets can create a lasting impression on your visitors. Hence, paint your old cabinets to improve the look of the entire kitchen. Learn how to paint old kitchen cabinets, with the instructions given in the following lines.
How To Paint Old Kitchen Cabinet
Supplies Needed
- Paint
- Primer
- Paint Brush
- Drop Cloth
- Water
- Sandpaper
- Scrubbing pad/Sponge
- Liquid Cleaner
- Dry Cloth
Procedure
- First, take out everything stored inside the cabinet. When the cabinet is empty, remove the doors and the hardware (knobs), by removing the screws.
- The next step is to clean the cabinet. Make use of a solution of warm water mixed with a liquid cleaner, to remove the dirt and oil deposits in the interiors of the cabinet. You may wipe the cabinet with a non-abrasive scrubbing pad or a sponge, dampened with the cleaning solution. You may clean the exteriors of the cabinet, using a clean cloth dipped in water.
- After washing the cabinet, leave it for few minutes, so that it can dry completely.
- Now, check for areas that are not smooth. This could be at the cabinet base and on the doors. Sand the areas with a sandpaper and then wipe away any dust from the surface, using a dry cloth.
- You need to apply a primer, before painting the cabinet. After you are done with applying the primer, leave the cabinet for an hour, so that it is dry completely.
- It is the time to paint the cabinet. You may choose high-gloss or a semi-gloss paint, for the cabinets. Make use of a quality brush for applying the paint.
- You may apply two to three coats of paint. Leave a gap of four hours between each coat.
- After painting the interiors of the cabinet, move on to the doors and then paint the base.
- After the final coat of the paint is also dry, replace the hardware and doors.
Tips
- While sanding the surface of the cabinet, do not scrub too harshly with the sandpaper.
- A single coat of primer is enough. While applying the coat, make sure that the brush is stroked evenly.
- You may cover the floor with drop cloths, when you are painting the cabinet.
- Smear the cabinet with a washable paint, so that you can water-wash its interiors.
- Be sure to leave the cabinet to dry, after each coat of the paint.
