Laminate Kitchen Cabinets

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

Plastic laminate is a popular choice for kitchen cabinets because it is durable, stain resistant and available in an array of colors, patterns, and textures. It is also easy to clean, but just because it easy to clean doesn’t mean that you can neglect to give it maintenance.

Unfortunately, there are two common problems with plastic laminate countertops which include chipping and torn edges. However, due to advances in technology; you can repair a small chip for less than $20. Edge repairs cost about the same. The process for repairing a small chip in a counter top is exactly the same as filling the seam when repairing a torn edge.
Plastic laminate is nothing more than Kraft paper, resins bonded together under heat and pressure, and a plastic coating. You will notice with plastic laminates that the Kraft paper that it is constructed of leaves a brown edge. However, this brown edge can be covered and decorated with a stainless steel, brass, or wood trim. If you decide to go with a more expensive solid-color laminate, you will notice plastic sheets of the same color throughout so that no dark edges are revealed.

Laminate cabinets have several benefits that cannot be found with other cabinet materials. For one, they’re stain resistant. Due to their incredible
resilience, maintenance is a cinch. So when the next food fight breaks out in your kitchen, you can rest easy. Because they are man-made items, they are not limited to tones/patterns, and they come in a varied palette of colors. Additionally, laminate cabinets do not warp and are very strong, which means that you can store heavy items with confidence, knowing that there will be no structural damage to your cabinets.

Even if your kitchen layout is just what you want and the cabinets are in good condition, you can still give your kitchen a fantastic facelift by refacing the cabinet doors. If your doors are laminate, you can make your cabinets look brand new by following these simple ideas.

Refacing laminate kitchen cabinet doors need not be a difficult job and the results can transform your kitchen from a room that looks tired and worn-out to one that is bursting with style and color. Here are two ideas for refacing your laminate kitchen cabinet doors that should be relatively easy to carry out and will not cost a fortune.

Resurfacing Kitchen Cabinets

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets can be a less expensive alternative to replacing cabinets and will update your kitchen and give it a whole new look. To resurface your cabinets, means literally to “give them a new surface”. There are a couple of ways to accomplish this – some expensive and some for budgets.

Typically, refacing or resurfacing kitchen cabinets should be done by a professional. It consists of replacing the cabinet doors and drawer fronts and putting a matching veneer on the cabinet frame. You can get any type of wood or plastic you want so your options are unlimited. It can be quite costly ranging anywhere from $3500 to over $10,000 and takes 2 to 4 days depending on how big the job is.

This type of resurfacing can be a good idea if you like the cabinet layout and your cabinets are in good solid condition (many of the older cabinets are very solid and high quality). If, however, your cabinets are weak or damaged or you want to change the design you will probably want to get replacement cabinets – it might not cost that much more and could add a lot to the usefulness of the room and your homes value.

If you don’t have $3500 in your budget for resurfacing kitchen cabinets, then there are several alternative that are much less costly!

My number 1 choice for changing cabinets is paint. You can make a huge change just by painting them – especially if you are going with a retro look and you are daring enough to use a splashy color like pink, turquoise or orange. For those really brave souls you can even paint designs on the cabinets or use stencils or a faux finish. Wouldn’t a country kitchen look nice with painted cabinets and a nice country stencil on the top? Just add some matching hardware and you’ve got new cabinets for under $300!

Another idea is to remove the doors altogether. This would only suit a few decorating themes but would be great way of resurfacing kitchen cabinets in a cottage kitchen design or even an antique Victorian design. You can line the shelves with lace or doilies that flap over the edge to add to the look. Maybe you could even find old windows that are the right size to use as doors or make up new doors from another type of material that goes with your theme like bamboo or even fabric.

Another idea for resurfacing kitchen cabinets is to wallpaper them or apply contact paper. Of course you’ll want to use something with a plain pattern and that is washable. Just prepare the cabinets the same way you would if you were wallpapering a wall. You don’t need to wallpaper the whole thing, you can cut out shapes or patterns from the contact paper or wallpaper and just paste those on. I don’t think this type of resurfacing would last forever but it might make a nice short-term change.

Start early when planning a new kitchen for Xmas

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

Consumers looking at new kitchens with a view to making over this part of their property in time for Christmas may need to start planning now.

Speaking to the Detroit News, Wayne Weintraub of US firm Kurtis Kitchen and Bath Centers says it is important to begin thinking about a new kitchen design as soon as possible – especially if it is likely that things like cabinets will need to be specially ordered.

He also recommends sticking to a particular kitchen design once it has been drawn up, rather than making changes to it later on and risking delaying the completion of the project.

“People think if they decide to change from a single-bowl sink to a double sink that it won’t affect the timeframes, but that little change impacts the plumbing and countertops,” Mr Weintraub notes.

Rachael Liska of Fresh Home magazine recently advised in a Minneapolis Star Tribune article that consumers should give careful thought to the layout and storage options associated with their new kitchen.

They may also want to consider the availability of power points in the locations where appliances will go and the adequacy of the lighting they have chosen.

Black kitchens

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

Most people who take the daring step of designing a black kitchen have a clear picture in their head of what they want to achieve, which is just as well.

black-kitchens

Black kitchen designs don’t have to be dark.

Using black as the primary colour for any room in the house is a brave decision, not least the kitchen. Most people want their kitchen to be a bright and airy space, two things not immediately associated with black. However, with the right touches, a stylish and inviting kitchen can still be achieved.

Start by thinking about what things specifically you want to have in black. Do you want a black sink, units, table? Unfortunately, if you have absolutely everything black, you will create a very cold, uninviting atmosphere. The key is balance.

Creating a black kitchen that works involves picking the right materials and tones to compliment the dark elements you introduce into your design. A popular choice is to use dark wooden cupboards and doors and then have black work tops. Other people prefer black cupboards and then have white surface tops and appliances. Picking the right scheme and applying it properly will determine how successful your design is.

For a contemporary design, using the colour with metallic accents is a great way to achieve the look. For instance, black cupboards and draws with metallic handles always looks very sleek. Black surfaces and metallic cooker hoods will also achieve a similar effect.

A black kitchen design is a brave decision but don’t let people tell you it’s the wrong decision. It can take that little bit extra work to achieve the right balance, but with time and effort you’ll be rewarded with a stunning kitchen.

7 Kitchen Design Ideas

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

Authors Note: When either redesigning an existing kitchen or you are creating a new kitchen for a new home, some design ideas need to be examined. These kitchen design ideas can include whether it is a good ideas to include an island, a kitchen canopy, color of cabinets to set the tone of the kitchen, selecting the right lighting design, and the type or material used for the countertops.

Kitchens have evolved a lot over the years. Once found only in the rear of the house, today’s kitchen design takes the kitchen out the background. The challenge for kitchen design is in creating a more open-faced kitchen, that is part of a dining area, a family room or a great room.

luxury-kitchen-designs-from-comprex.jpg

In deciding on how to design your kitchen, you must take into consideration such things as: will your kitchen have an island? Will it be of a modern or traditional design? What kinds of appliances will you need for your new kitchen design? What kind of lighting design?

1. Kitchen as ‘Great Room’

Whether you are redesigning an existing kitchen or planning a new kitchen in a new home there are some design considerations to keep in mind, such as including in an island or peninsula as part of the kitchen design. These can be used to connect the kitchen to a nearby dining area or family room thereby creating a ‘great room’. A kitchen island or peninsula will allow the cook to keep in visual and conversational contact with family members or guests in the adjoining family or dining room.

2. Create a Kitchen Canopy

To give the kitchen some visible borders without blocking views create a kitchen canopy. Also a high ceiling in the kitchen can create the perception of spaciousness.

3. Using Kitchen Cabinet Color to Set Tone of Kitchen Design

Kitchen cabinets will help set the tone for the whole room. The choice of wood will influence the overall look of your cabinets. To create a light look, use a light wood such as ash, beech, birch, oak, maple, or chestnut. For medium range, select cherry. To darker kitchens, choose wood that has some color to it.

4. Plan Out Use of Cabinets and Drawers in The New Kitchen Design

Plan out in the kitchen design blueprint just how your cabinets and drawers will be used and how much space and storage you will need before you start your new kitchen design. The first thing to examine is the counter surface area. Look at where you put everything in your existing kitchen and where in your new kitchen design will these things will go in the new space. Will there be more than one person cooking at a time. If so, will there be enough room for two cooks in the kitchen to work together?

5. Use The Galley-Type Kitchen Design

As for counter arrangements, many kitchen designers agree the galley-type design to be the best in terms of efficiency with it’s single aisle and counters to either side, making it easy to turn around to go from sink to cooking range.

6. Under-Cabinet Kitchen Lighting

kitchen lighting can be an overlooked area of kitchen design. Even if the kitchen has generally good lighting, the counter areas can be somewhat dark. For these areas under-cabinet lighting can help provide more light to work in. By using simple spots or fluorescent lights a smaller kitchen can be made to look larger.

7. Looking at Countertops

Granite, marble, and limestone are all popular natural materials for use in countertops are available in many colors. Ceramic tile kitchen countertops are versatile, practical, and also available in many colors, as well as many shapes, patterns, and finishes. Solid surface countertops provide seamless acrylic faces. Solid surfaces also come in almost limitless colors, patterns, and styles, and are stain and heat resistant. Laminate countertops are more affordable but not built to last. Concrete countertops are known for versatility, as well as strength. Wood countertops are long lasting and easy to clean and repair but the wood will not withstand exposure to water and household chemicals. Stainless steel countertops lack the elegance of granite or tile. These countertops do not absorb stains, but tends to scratch easily.
