A simple palette of black and white, accented with just a hint of color, helps to create a country-traditional kitchen with a shade of glamour. Sleek white-painted flat-panel cabinets contrast the jet-black, T-shape island. The unique shape of that focal point provides space for cooking and meal preparation as well as seating on the perpendicular element. The mint-green bead board paneling adds a soft touch to the room, as do accents such as the wire-wrap pendants, open shelves, and glass-front cabinets.
Paint It White
White is your best friend in a small kitchen. It reflects light, which enhances the sense of space and makes the walls seem to recede. When you carry the white from the cabinetry to the countertops, walls, and ceiling, you create a seamless space without edges or boundaries to stop the eye. Use several shades of white and combine contrasting textures to keep an all-white room from feeling sterile. Recessed-panel cabinets and crown molding create subtle shadows that add interest, too.
Galley kitchens often require ingenious solutions to space challenges. To save space for a large stainless-steel undermount sink, these homeowners opted for a wall-mount faucet that swings out over the sink. A small filtered water faucet sits to the side of the sink. Above, stainless-steel open shelves house dishware close to the dishwasher, making it easy to unload the appliance.
This white galley kitchen has a pretty, country look. Classic white cabinets reflect light from the windows, making the room feel bigger. A raised ceiling adds visual volume and prevents the space from feeling cramped. A small wicker dining set contributes to the casual ambience.
The kitchen is one of the most complicated remodeling projects because of all the decisions you will make throughout the process. We’ll walk you through this with our planning and buying guides, covering everything from foundation appliances, cabinetry, surfaces and finishes to sustainable products and extras like wine coolers and microwave drawers.
According to Remodeling magazine, a major kitchen renovation can result in a return on investment of between 61 and 70 percent of the cost.
Cabinets accented with classic molding and furniture-style details lend timeless traditional style to this elegant kitchen. A dark glaze layered over the creamy white perimeter cabinets conveys a sense of formality by enhancing the cabinetry’s fine fluting, shapely legs, and intricate crown molding. A black-matte finish on the generous island compliments the scene with striking contrast. To prevent today’s traditional style from feeling stodgy and unlivable, add a thoughtful dose of casual embellishments, such as the beaded-board panels and wire-mesh door fronts that hint towards English country ambiance in this kitchen.
Contemporary kitchens tend to be described as modern, minimalist and geometric. The characteristics include horizontal lines, asymmetry and a lack of molding and other ornamentation. Materials often are man-made rather than natural: stainless steel, laminate, frosted glass inserts, concrete, linoleum, chrome and lacquer.
A custom-made, cylindrical cabinet is the focal point of this kitchen island. The raised drum unit features solid tulipwood cabinets painted an ivory color, and a walnut butcher-block countertop.
New to a kitchen and not sure where to locate which dishes? No worries: this clever custom kitchen cabinet system will light your way to the right serving bowls, plates, utensils and gadgets, showing their forms as shadows directly on the doors of these cabinets.
Ever the hybrid architect, artist and minimalist designer, Jean Nouvelhas accomplished a great deal with this design idea – the find-anything functionality of see-through cabinetry, the animated and ever-changing artistry of light and dark shapes and the naturally and of course the built-in lighting itself that can illuminate the kitchen background while you cook.
