HOW TO TILE BATHROOM WALLS AND SHOWER/TUB AREA

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

Licensed contractor Amy Matthews shows how to install tiles in a bathroom shower area and the walls to transform a tired old bathroom into a classic Art Deco retreat.

Set the Tile Rail

Step 1: Plan Project and Select Tiles
In our project, we brought an old ’70s bathroom into classic Art Deco style. We removed a wall where an old single vanity used to be in favor of a double vanity. To get the plumbing ready for the new vanity, a vented T was added and the drainpipe extended.
Since the backerboard is already installed around the tub, the tile is ready to be installed. In our project, the homeowner met with a tile expert for design advice and was impressed by handmade 3×6″ subway tile. Compared to mechanical or machine-made tile which are lower priced, handmade tiles feature more pooling of the glazes at the edge and appear more textured.
In our project, the homeowners decided to go with machine-made subway tile (about $2 to $4 per square foot) versus handmade tile (approximately $13 to $30 per square foot). Machine-made tile is easy to install yourself because the tile is beveled out. As a result, you don’t have to use tile spacers. Both the subway tile and accent tiles we used are self-spacing in this way so they don’t require spacers. These tiles have a small lip that creates a uniform gap between the tiles, forming perfectly spaced grout joints.
Note: Finishing options include top caps, called listellos, and the use of accent tile between the top cap and field tile. Field tiles are those in the main field of a floor or wall and they’re flat in contrast to trim tiles which are shaped. Border tiles border around field tiles while accent tiles are used to add interest, usually intermixed with field tiles. Read more »

Toilet and Bath Floor Plan

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

Toilet and Bath Floor Plan

The kind of fixtures you buy for a bath remodeling will depend on how much you have to spend, and on how large a room you are planning to remodel. Cost of bathroom fixtures varies with size, style, fittings, and materials used. Regarding bathroom layouts, be sure to allow at least one and half feet between the front of the sink and the front of the toilet. There should be two feet between the front of any fixture and the wall across from it. Minimum bathroom floor area needed for a person cleaning the tub is 30 inches (along the side of the tub) by 20 inches.

At the side of the fixtures allow at least two inches between toilet tank and sink or vanity and three inches between toilet and bathtub and four inches between toilet and the wall at the side of it. The best bathroom floor plans will locate the toilet so the large waste pipe goes between and parallel to the floor joists rather than cutting through them. This saves cutting the joists and may save costly floor framing. You can also save on the cost of piping by placing all the fixtures along one wall in new bath remodel. It is best to allow six inches between sink vanity and the wall. Allow more than the minimum of space if you can. Leave room for storage cabinets and towel bars. Rearrange your design until you have the fixtures in the best possible layout.

Also, is there enough towel rod space for your family needs?

Plan for storage space for all the supplies and accessories you would like to keep in the new bathroom design. In addition, it is best to have the bathroom lighting arranged to shine on the face of the person using the mirror. Bath Remodeling: Bathroom Floor Plans

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

37

There are several ways to plan for a successful bathroom remodeling. An old favorite way to draw up bathroom floor plans was to make cut-outs of brown paper or newspaper exactly the size of the fixtures you plan to use in the bath remodel. Then arrange the cut-outs on the floor of the space you will remodel for the bathroom. Another way is to draw a bathroom floor plan to scale on graph paper. Let ½ inch equal 1 foot of the available bathroom design space. Make cut-outs of fixtures drawn to the same scale. Draw lines in this bathroom plan to show the location of windows and doors.

Don’t worry if the finished bath design appears small; remember that the latest bathroom tiles design can make a room appear larger. Then arrange the cut-outs on the floor plan. Be sure to allow for enough space between bathroom fixtures to clean easily. Plan the plumbing so pipes can be put into walls and under the floor where they are hidden from sight. If vertical pipes cannot be placed in the walls, box them in. Plumbing fixtures are heavy; make sure the floor joists are large enough to hold the fixtures. In an old house remodeling, have an experienced builder check the floors before beginning the bath remodeling. They may need more or larger joists.

7×8 Small Modern Bathroom Designs

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

7x8 Small Modern Bathroom Designs

If your bathroom can be as large as a 7×8 bathroom floor plan, you can arrange the bathroom fixtures in a number of ways. Moreover, the extra floor space with small bathroom designs this size makes it possible to use the bathroom as a dressing room. This is also an economical arrangement if all the fixtures are placed along the 7 foot wall across from the door; you can save on the cost of piping by placing all the fixtures along one wall. To the left of the door is a floor-to-ceiling cabinet for towels and bath supplies. The tub has been recessed by building a wall between tub and the cabinet. The key to achieving well-designed modern bathrooms is to make it feel more spacious. Now, more than ever before, bathroom fixtures are available in a beautiful selection of colors, materials, sizes and styles. With small in size bathroom fixtures, you can visually open up the space. This is a popular solution adopted by many professional designers.

In the 7×8 modern bathroom design, you will need an overhead bathroom light fixture as well as light at the mirror. For most small bathroom designs, a light over the mirror, or bathroom sconces at the sides, will be enough. For side light fixtures, placement about 5-1/2 feet from floor to center of bulb is the right height. Place fixtures so the light shines on both sides of the face instead of in the mirror. For safety, use wall switches rather than pull chains for the light fixtures. In the bathroom it is usually possible to touch both water and metal while using electric bathroom appliances or switching on lights. There is a great danger of shock if wiring is defective, or equipment is not properly grounded. So, try to locate switches and convenience outlets out of reach of anyone in the tub and away from pipes or other metal objects in small bathroom designs.

Small Modern Bathroom Designs

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

Small Modern Bathroom Designs

The smallest modern bathroom layout you can design and still handle an average size tub is 5 feet square. The sink in small bathroom designs can extend from the wall only 15 inches and the toilet only 27 inches. This provides the minimum space needed between front of sink and the toilet. Nevertheless, the 5×5 small bathroom plan does not provide enough space in front of the tub for easy cleaning. In a room as small as this, there is space for storage if a narrow bathroom vanity is installed instead of a pedestal sink. The latest bathroom tiles design can make a room appear larger.

Moreover, storage space in modern bathrooms can be carved out in the studs of the wall above both the toilet and the sink. With a 5 x 5 bathroom layout it is necessary for the door to open out of the room and the window situated window over the tub. This is not a good or a safe place for a window, but sometimes it is the only possible location. If you are faced with a window over a tub, casement windows with cranks are easier to open than double-hung windows.

Best Small Bathroom Designs

By KBC Kitchen & Bathroom

5×5 small bathroom designs are strictly one-person bathrooms. If there are children or others who need help in the bathroom, plan a bigger room. By making modern bathrooms slightly larger, maybe 5×7 feet, the door can open into the room. With a shower stall instead of the bath tub, there is space along the 5 foot length wall for a built-in bathroom vanity with counter space and storage area underneath. Two casement windows over the counters allows for plenty of daylight at the mirror. The best way to arrange 5×8 bathroom designs is to center the door along the long wall. To allow the door to open, the sink or bathroom vanity cannot extend more than 18 inches from the wall. In this layout, the tub fits into one end of the room. Behind the door there is space for a floor-to-ceiling cabinet 12 inches deep and 24 inches wide.
